procrastination
CD Mohatta asked:

To delay or postpone an action that needs to be done is procrastination. I will do this afterwards. There is enough time still. What do these people think by setting deadlines? I have my own priorities. This is boring. What I do not do this work at all? Ultimately what will I gain by doing this? Why cannot I have some freedom? Why everything needs to be done on time? These are all typical thoughts of a procrastinator. Rather if we finish a job in given time, we feel happier. But a lot many of us procrastinate. What are the possible reasons?

The first cause may be doing something means dropping something else which is more comfortable. Ask any smoker about when he/she proposes to drop the habit and the answer always mentions some time in future -never the present. Delay the process of pain and get as much pleasure as possible. But the pleasure that a procrastinator derives by delay is itself a pain. On the other hand if the procrastinator finishes the job in time, the pleasure of doing something unpleasant will be far greater. It also enhances self-esteem. But we still procrastinate. Is that not mysterious?

Fear of failure may be another possible cause. We may sometimes take up a task that looks very difficult. Our outcome can be known only when we try to finish it. Till we do not try, we are happy with the thought that we can probably do it. This fear of failing causes damage. The correct course would be try, if failure results, seek help and try again. But we postpone. There are many other underlying emotions that make a person procrastinate. The strange part is that a person may delay doing one thing but never delay another? For example, if given work in Math and history, a student may finish his/her Math works fast and postpone the History part. This may be as well vice versa.

Does procrastination help? It rarely does. It instead adds the pressure of guilt on the mind. It keeps the pressure on all the time. Doing a work and finishing with it can remove the pressure. By postponing it we stop our onward progress, because the incomplete work always remains on the agenda. Those who set time goals, and proceed according to the set schedules are far happier and self-confident persons. They always have the satisfaction of having finished the work. Those who do not value their time and in turn their life highly develop habits such as procrastination.

procrastination
Abhishek Agarwal asked:

Researchers have shown that we waste about 80% time doing things that don’t really help us succeed in our projects. We take up a lot of endless tasks which keep us busy most of the time and still wonder why we haven’t been able to accomplish much.

What makes us miss deadlines, postpone things we don’t like and accept procrastination and stress as an integral part of our lives? What experiences have contributed your outlook on time? Do you have to rethink your opinions? If you have to talk to some students about optimizing the use of time, what will you tell them?

This quiz shall help you identify the areas where you need to work on to overcome procrastination:

-I mostly delay acting on something and making decisions since I require more information.

-I find it difficult to know when I should finish the researching phase of my project. I worry that I would not have enough information to finish it.

-I often get stuck up in between my project if adjustments need to be made owing to changing circumstances.

-I always think that my time is being well-utilized as long as I am gathering details for a project.

In case you answered in the affirmative to any above-mentioned statement, you have to realize that procrastination is stopping you from everything that you can do in your life. Most people convince themselves that they require more information and delay taking action. People who succeed in life know that facts are not as important as opinions and experience when it comes to making effective decisions.

Set yourself deadlines, even when you do not require them. It will never be possible for you to collect all the information. You should learn when to stop. Make the right decision depending on the information you possess at the moment. To act is the important thing. We live in a world that’s increasingly complex; it is difficult for our techniques of gathering information to keep pace with the changing circumstances affecting our lives. It is not possible for us to control most of these circumstances or how others respond to these things.

Make yourself act. No matter what decision we take today, we’d have to think about it again-and most modify it most probably-when we encounter a change in circumstance. Whatever you decide on doing now, you’ll have to correct yourself as you proceed towards your goal. Postponing a decision so that you can gather more information is the most common way of wasting your time.

Do not forget to ask yourself if you have to do a particular task at all. According to the Bible, “How forceful are right words! But what does your arguing prove? Question yourself: What does all my work prove? Focus on finishing your work instead of filling up your day with a lot of activities than you could possibly complete. If you wish to overcome procrastination, you should stop gathering information and start working on your project.

procrastination
Allan Wilson asked:

In the modern world, when we all have so many things to do, it is increasingly important to know how to manage our time and our life management. What really helps is learning to manage the emotional reaction we have when we need to do something we don’t want to do, don’t like to do, or are convinced we just can’t do. Learn to understand why we avoid something, and it is a great deal easier to find a way to deal with it.

Sometimes we put things off because we just don’t like doing them. Sometimes we don’t do something because we think we can’t actually do it. Often we don’t start something because we don’t think we can do it well enough. For some people, there is a deep rooted psychological reason for not doing things. For others, it can just be a question of realizing that you don’t enjoy doing something, or really dislike doing something.

It is important to find out our own reasoning for putting things off, as this is the best way to devise methods of overcoming the problems of procrastination.

There are all sorts of ways in which we can overcome procrastination. Not addressing the problem can be very life damaging. Procrastination can easily become habit forming, and can have a serious impact on our life, the lives of the people around us, and ultimately our health, both physical and mental.

Methods of overcoming procrastination range from doing a little bit of self analysis to work out why we put things off; using some basic time and job planning; to getting proper behavioral therapy.

For most people, it is a question of establishing that there are underlying emotional links between the tasks we put off and our inability to deal with them. So spending some time seriously questioning our feelings, as well as our actions, is really helpful. We also need to recognize that only Superman is likely to both enjoy and be good at everything. It is not to our detriment that we are not good at everything. Our self esteem does not need to be given a hammering if we accept that we have aspects of life that we are not good at, or just plain don’t like dealing with.

If you know you are not particularly good at organizing the finances, and accept that, you are more likely to be able to convince yourself that you should spend an hour or two dealing with the bank statements etc, than to spend it worrying that you won’t be able to make the figures balance.

Take the emotion and the fear out of the equation, and suddenly it’s a whole lot easier. When you suddenly feel that sinking sensation, don’t get up and find something else to do. Stop, and think about why it is you need to do this particular job. Think about the fact that, in deciding to do the job, you are doing something that will improve your life and something that is definitely in your best interests.

The worst thing you can do if you are a procrastinator is to do nothing. The best thing is to begin by putting some effort into understanding why you do it, and by establishing some fairly straightforward organizational rules about how to use your time.

For most of us, there will be one or two things, at least, that we will put off dealing with. It is quite normal to procrastinate over something or other. For most of us, the problem is not too great, and doesn’t threaten to destroy the quality of our lives. So time management, time boxing, etc is the way to deal with getting things back on track.

Find a time each day when you will deal with something that you know you don’t want to do. Give yourself a pat on the back when you have put in the time and effort even if you haven’t finished the job completely. What you have achieved is important and you have made a start, and you have not run away from it.

However, for some people, procrastination is a much more serious problem. For some people, there are deep seeded reasons for putting things off, or just not dealing with things at all! Some people have a subconscious reaction resulting from over controlling parents perhaps. Some have a deep rooted fear of failure, which has led to a resistance when dealing with certain tasks. Some people are frightened of not doing something perfectly.

It might be painful to establish the reasons why we procrastinate, but it will certainly help to spend some time thinking it through. There are lots of fairly straightforward ways of helping ourselves improve our ability to deal with the million and one things that need to be done to keep our lives on track, and still have time to enjoy our leisure.

Getting to grips with the idea that better time management, better task management and better self management is really about getting the best out of life. Wasting time is really not in our best interests. Making time for enjoyment is.

procrastination
Jim Somchai asked:

When you start to work on something, do you notice that your mind tend to fly away from your task? You have tendency of thinking about other thing to do now and postpone what you need to do until later time. A lot of time, you don’t even start what you plan to do because you think other tasks are more important. You give yourself the reasons and new “rough” time frame to do this project and you forget about it. This is what happen and here comes procrastination.

In this article, we will talk about how we can practically finish our project without procrastination by partly using the law of attraction.

1. Have firm written plan

When you start any project in your life, write down what you want to achieve and what to do to get it. If you have not done this step, you are not really serious on what you want. Then you have to go back to why you want this project to be done. What you will get from it. Do you really want it? If the reason is strong enough, you will start to find the necessary steps to do. Here comes the plan.

A lot of time, you may not have enough knowledge or resources to accomplish what you want. Don’t worry. Most successful people also started up that way. When you are serious about your goal and you continually visualize about it. The law of attraction will help attract what you need into your life.

Anyway, you need to have your plan and time frame on each step so that you know how you are doing during the journey. If you have a written plan, your chance to procrastinate drastically reduces.

2. Clear out your work space. Only one thing left to do.

People can easily get overwhelmed by piles of work in front of them. As a result, they can not finish any of them and they procrastinate to do them in other times. This will not happen if you focus on one task at a time. In order to do that, you need to practice to clean out your work space. Do not allow anything that can distract you on your working desk. Just one thing on your table is left and you start working on it until it finish.

3. Start urgent and important tasks. Prioritize the tasks.

You need to classify your tasks into groups of activities. See which one is urgent for you to do and which one is important to do. A lot of urgent tasks are not really important and a lot of important tasks are not really urgent. Give priority to the ones which is both urgent and important. Practice it and you will find that you reduce your procrastination greatly when you see the urgency of some tasks.

4. Do the large task first. Respect the deadline.

When you set up the deadline of each task, you need to commit to it. Respect it as it is one of your values. You must do what you need to do on time. When you develop a habit of respecting the deadline, you will find yourself having higher standard. Also, do the larger parts of your task first. Once you finish the large and difficult ones, the small ones left will be easy for you. You will want to finish the whole chunk of it to get the sense of self-fulfillment.

5. Use creative procrastination.

You can procrastinate what is not relevant or not important for achieving your goals. Ask yourself ” do this need to be done?” ” what will happen if it is not done yet?” If it has no impact on your advancement toward your goals, postpone it. This creative procrastination will enormously save your time and allow you to focus on more valuable activities. You may end up not doing a lot of those procrastinated tasks. That is good for you. They are not important for you anyway.

A lot of people want to eliminate procrastination habit. This article talks about how to do in order to reduce procrastination by partly applying the law of attraction.

procrastination
Tim Bryce asked:

I think we’re all pretty much guilty of some form of procrastination during our lives. I know I am. The word itself comes from the Latin word “procrastinatus”: pro- (forward) and crastinus (of tomorrow). We try to put something off as long as possible, hoping that it will go away, but it rarely ever does. We avoid it because procrastination means to do something considered painful to us, be it a hard decision or a difficult task. We often use the lame excuse that we don’t have time to do something, but the reality is we plain and simply don’t want to do it. I don’t think anyone actually procrastinates over something they really want to do. So we should look upon procrastination as a sign of how a person really feels about something.

This got me thinking about how many decisions we make during the day. We make all kinds of trivial decisions, such as what clothes we will wear, what to eat, etc., but how many significant decisions do we really make? Probably not as many as we think. Financial decisions are often painfully difficult, such as where we should invest money, the purchase of a new house or automobile, insurance, etc., but we don’t make as many of these decisions as we should. We also infrequently think about career and health related decisions. Probably the two areas we most frequently make decisions about is related to our jobs and maintaining our homes. In terms of our jobs, it seems the bigger the assignment, the harder it is to make decisions regarding it and we often seek advice, particularly if our job depends on it. But the same is true at home as well; the bigger the task, the more likely we are to seek advice. For example, there is a big difference between replacing carpeting in a room, and replacing a roof. This implies there is a comfort factor involved with making a decision. In other words, do we know all of the variables and are we convinced this is the proper course of action to take? If we do not, we tend to procrastinate. Replacing a roof is a much more complicated problem than simply replacing a carpet, thereby requiring more studying and advice.

Perhaps the best way to overcome procrastination is to simply prioritize your objectives and assignments, determine not only what you would like to do but what would be most beneficial to you, and get up off your *** and do it. Avoid defeatist attitudes, and try to think positive. You might just find that the problem you have been procrastinating over is not as difficult as you thought it was. But understand this, it will not go away on its own and the old axiom, “Not to decide, is to decide,” will inevitably kick in (and usually not in your favor).

“Take time to deliberate; but when the time for action arrives, stop thinking and go in.”

- Andrew Jackson
