procrastination
Lael Johnson asked:

Copyright 2005 Writer’s Eye Advisory Service

I’m assuming that you have encountered some form of procrastination in your life. For those of you who don’t struggle with procrastination. Congratulations! I find procrastination especially frustrating to handle, when it disguises itself as irritability, confusion and anger, pointing my heart and mind away from where the real causes lie.

Procrastination is a temporary solution to cover or push away intense feelings during the creative process. Some creatives feel anxiety before starting a project. Others feel depressed in the middle of creating a project. Still others struggle being unable to finish a project, especially one that comes closest to the realization of part of their artistic vision. They don’t want to face the unknowns of exploring a new project.

Procrastination is a form of self-sabotage. I call it a short-term last resort. If you let procrastination go, it can take over your life. In the following exercises, I can increase your awareness of how procrastination may be interfering with your work. Remember to choose to work one exercise at time. Take your time when you write. Be patient as you start to react to these two exercises. Let your mind and heart gently guide you toward deeper awareness and desire to change.

TO-DO LISTS: Lists are easy to write in your journal. If you can write a laundry list, then you can write a journal list. Feel free to choose organization tools that work best for you. My preference is to use a combination of my calendar, some goal files (pc), index cards and my memory. When I’m creating lists, I like having access to both flexible tools(cards and memory) and a workable structure ( past lists and some goal files). Remember to write a clear, easy to read, and detailed to-do list.

CHOOSE ONE AREA: Choose one urgent “procrastination” area. To help your focus answer the following questions about your situation:

Purpose: Increasing your awareness of your resistance: What part of this activity, that I don’t want to do? (answer in specifics) What am I feeling about working on this activity? (There may be more than one feeling) What would I rather be doing? What is so attractive about resisting this activity?

Purpose: Increasing your awareness of your motivation: What part of doing this creative project do you like? What are your feeling about this creative project? (any feelings)

Summarize your resistance statements and your motivated statements Look for any similarities and differences (use this information to answer the next question) Look for ways to increase your motivational actions and decrease your procrastination actions.

Congratulations! You’ve chosen your new goal. Start working on it now!! No more procrastination!

procrastination
Nancy Ho asked:

Why procrastination is bad for us

Procrastination steals from us. It steals our time, our dreams, our opportunities and our productivity. And we blame ourselves and make ourselves miserable for missing those opportunities.

Putting off till tomorrow what we should do today can cost us money. Pay a credit card bill and you are hit with a late payment fee. To some that seems okay, because maybe it’s only a few dollars. Pay your income tax late and you could go to court! To most people that is definitely not good. Put off removing that pile of rubbish could mean the national health agency slaps you with a $10,000 fine for creating a health hazard.

Procrastination is not a healthy behaviour, especially for business. No business can survive if the owner or any employees procrastinates. It just isn’t possible to generate revenue, and even if that was somehow possible, the consequences of procrastination would wipe out the business in costs.

When a dream is forgotten or put off indefinitely, it is such a great shame, because in each dream is a diamond in the rough just waiting to be polished and shared to light the world around.

We only have so many minutes in our lives, and every breath we take is just one away from our eventual departure from this world. The time we have with our loved ones, family and friends is very precious, and yet when we procrastinate we are just shrugging off the diminishing time we have left.

What can you do about it?

The simple answer is to stop procrastinating. Making resolutions to get things done or making out a list of things to do does not work. Resolutions can get shelved or forgotten. Lists fall behind desks and collect dust. Will power might work, but the conscious is a swimming pool compared to the ocean of the sub-conscious, which is where you will find the real causes of procrastination.

The first step is the need to recognise the seriousness of your procrastination, and that you have a problem. Without realising the need to do something about it, you are like a ship without a rudder, aimless and pointless. When you can do that, your next step will be to get into a program to change your habitual way of thinking.

How can hypnotherapy help?

Procrastination, being rooted in sub-conscious blocks, needs to be addressed at that level, and working at the sub-conscious level is the greatest strength of hypnotherapy.

Your conscious mind introduces an enormous amount of chatter that blocks many of the beneficial suggestions that could change your behaviour. When you are in hypnosis, you are calm and relaxed and your analyzing mind is turned off, and you will be bypassing your conscious mind. The suggestions the hypnotherapist makes to change your behaviour (for example, to take action immediately when you have to do a task) will be easily and readily accepted.

Within a few sessions with your hypnotherapist, you will find you are able to get so many things done.

procrastination
Kanaga Siva asked:

You started a Home Business with a lot of anticipation. You seem to be doing everything right but Procrastination seems to be getting hold of you and the progress you hoped to make in your Home Business appears to be eluding you. This scenario is not new and is encountered by quite a few new Home Business entrepreneurs.

They started hoping their path will be a bed of roses but when they find the going getting tough they tend to procrastinate.

Yes, what is Procrastination? The dictionary defines it as “deferring or postponing action” People who are afflicted by Procrastination know it themselves. Few make a genuine attempt to change but many don’t. They allow things to drag on or refuse to take the first positive step towards any solution.

Successful people seldom procrastinate. This is what propels them towards their goal and success in life. Even when they do procrastinate at times, they don’t allow procrastination to take hold of themselves.

How then can you stop procrastination and succeed in your Home Business

1. Set Realistic Goals.

Never undertake to do anything much more than what you can chew. If you attempt to do something that is beyond your capacity, the whole exercise might become overwhelming and prevent you from getting started. You then tend to procrastinate.

2. Prepare Lists.

It is always advantageous to prepare a list of the things you want to do. This will help you to achieve your goals and also help you to prioritize the tasks. A list with a short term objective and another with a long term objective. Break them again into smaller steps. The whole purpose of two lists is to motivate you to get started and to stop procrastination. A person with a tendency to procrastinate will never get started if he views a long list of tasks to be accomplished. On the other hand viewing a shorter list can encourage him to get started.

3. Always have a Deadline.

Deadlines always play a very important role when you plan to achieve some task. It has to be realistic and attainable. Unattainable deadlines can only cause frustration and develop a feeling of incompetence with respect to your ambition of operating a successful Home Business.

4. Get Started.

Once you have done all the preliminaries such as reading, planning, getting good advice etc. put your best foot forward and gets started. Perfection is not necessary. All your preparatory work will be of no avail if you hesitate or vacillate. This reminds me of a Chinese proverb: “He who deliberates fully before taking a step will spend his entire life on one leg.”

5. Read Success and Inspiring Stories.

Regular reading of the lives of successful men and women will inspire you to emulate them. Successful people seldom or never procrastinate and reading these stories will gradually wean you out of your tendency to procrastinate.

6. Reward Yourself.

Whenever you complete your task or achieve your minor goal, reward yourself. Take time out and enjoy the company of your friends or take your family out. This will give you a sense of joy, fulfillment and achievement and will motivate you further to be a successful Home Business entrepreneur.

Conclusion.

Successful people no doubt deliberate fully before making a positive move but they don’t procrastinate. They don’t hesitate to take the first step forward and that is what matters most. You too can stop Procrastination by following these methods and propel your Home Business to the top.

procrastination
Kelly Sims asked:

We all do it; we push the things we enjoy least to the bottom of our to-do list. Day after day that list builds and builds. No matter how much you love your business, there are always the mundane duties that you just can’t stand to do. Putting off these jobs allows them to multiply until the tasks seem insurmountable, creating stress and anxiety. If you are one of the many entrepreneurs who find themselves overwhelmed by dreaded duties, the following tips may help you defeat the urge to procrastinate and finally get those tedious tasks done:

1. Schedule these tasks early in your day. Decide how much time needs to be spent on each task and mark it in your calendar or agenda. If they need to be performed weekly, work on them first thing Monday morning. If they are daily jobs, work on them first thing each day. Deciding to work on the functions you enjoy least as early as possible will actually make your job more enjoyable. The rest of the day or week will then be dedicated to carrying out the duties you really enjoy. You will find yourself looking forward to your days instead of feeling a sense of dread over the mounting piles of monotonous work.

2. Reward yourself. When you have completed these wearisome deeds, reward yourself by taking a break, getting a coffee or having a snack. Knowing that there is a treat coming when you finish may not make you enjoy these duties any more, but it will likely give you the extra motivation to get the job done.

3. If the job seems huge, break it up. Divide the tasks into sections and schedule 2 or 3 times throughout your day to work on them. After completing each section, give yourself a little reward and move on to more enjoyable work. Be sure to set some kind of alarm to remind you when it’s time to get back to them, or you may get carried away with doing the jobs you love.

4. Don’t allow yourself to get distracted. While performing these despised duties, it’s very easy to become distracted by anything and everything. In fact, you may find yourself looking for distractions to avoid this work. The more focused you are, the faster you will complete these tasks and be finished with them. During this time, don’t check your email, chit chat with employees or colleagues, and don’t answer any personal phone calls.

5. Delegate. If you have employees, delegate some of these responsibilities to them; that’s what they are there for. If you don’t have employees, or your employees are as overwhelmed as you are, consider outsourcing. As a result of today’s advanced technologies, there are very few jobs that can’t be outsourced. Decide which task(s) you enjoy least and contract them to someone. There are Virtual Assistants to handle administrative duties, Accountants and Bookkeepers to manage financial functions, and there are even companies and individuals to whom you can outsource sales duties.

Procrastination leads to stress and anxiety, but these can be easily avoided. Don’t allow the urge to procrastinate overcome your desire to run your business efficiently. Following some or all of these simple steps may help you conquer your inclination to delay performing dreaded duties, allow you to more thoroughly enjoy your work day, and let you run your business mote effectively.

procrastination
Abhishek Agarwal asked:

Procrastination indeed keeps a majority of the people away from the brim of their lives. But what is it that seems to be so strong a monster?

Well, procrastination in literal terms means something ‘for tomorrow.’ It is derived from Latin words – pro and cras. ‘Pro’ refers to ‘for’ and ‘cras’ stands for ‘tomorrow.’ So, procrastination means the postponement of some task that you are ware of that you should do.

Procrastinators are not like that by birth –these negativities develop like other bad habits one at a time. Similarly, there are ways by which any individual can develop new habits of defeating procrastination – one at a time. The key idea is that you must initiate the first step. Trust us here – you would have never felt more active! Just go ahead and take the charge.

There are several ways of inspiring yourselves like reading articles & books on the means of overcoming procrastination. Even the best of the advices are of no good to any one, unless you act up on them.

Go ahead, feel encourages and make a commitment to yourself that you would act up on the ideas that we are about to give you now! While everything mentioned here might not be acceptable to you, but the goals must be clear – to fight back the devil of procrastination! Even we are on the same side of the coin that is living & fighting a battle against this monster, and it is not necessary at all that we always win! But out spirits never loose and that is the most important & must be so for all the individuals!

Procrastination keeps you away from the happy lives that you could have lived! But some people wonder as to why does one procrastinate any way? Well, here are some resons for the same.

a. Indecision

b. Stress

c. Fatigue

d. Depression

e. Desire to gather all the information

f. Disorganization

g. Fear of failure

h. Fear of success

None of us can defeat procrastination overnight. After all, the procrastinators accumulate bad habits over a long period of time! Though making a detailed & determined effort to fight back procrastination is a good idea to counter it! Set a discipline for yourself and follow it to get to the roots of all the problems.

The ‘musts’ of this discipline are as follows:

1. Take the complete responsibility of your failures.

Many people are in a habit to blame their failures on the circumstances. Well, when you convince your self that failures have occurred due to the circumstances that are beyond your control, mind you, you are fabricating a vicious circle of procrastination that would last you a lifetime.

2. Just do it!

The successful people are aware of the fact that their success solely depends on their commitment to accomplish all that it takes to reach their goals. Success in all your projects, whether large or small, is determined by your actions & the ability to remain focused on the goals. It is true with all sorts of goals whether it is to reduce the clutter at your house, lose your weight, restore the relationship, or complete the major project professionally! These projects come along with different sizes, shapes, and the levels of importance. But with out fail these principles must be determined on the basis of their success & failure are always similar; these are – focus, self-discipline, determination, and confidence.

3. Establish your priorities.

What do you mean by change? Change refers to choosing a behavior that is different from the one that you has earlier. We all must fight the drift towards procrastination every day. In case you are losing the fight against procrastination, you must get the priorities right. For this, pen down a list of the priorities at work & in the relationships.

Make sure to be committed to something that must be one of the highest priorities for the day. Great novelist George Eliot once said – It is never too late to become the person you could have been. And the best time to initiate it is now.
